   ロンドン五輪第１６日の１１日、バレーボール女子の３位決定戦があり、日本は韓国を３―０のストレートで破って銅メダルを獲得した。この競技の日本勢のメダルは１９８４年ロサンゼルス大会で女子が銅を獲得して以来、２８年ぶり。

　今大会の日本の総メダル数は、銀以上が確定しているボクシング男子ミドル級を含めて計３７個となり、過去最多だった２００４年アテネ大会に並んだ。

　■小さな背中

　実は、小さな柔道家にあこがれていた。１６年前の夏のことだ。吉田沙保里の中で「五輪」という言葉が福音のように響いたのは１９９６年アトランタ五輪。テレビ画面の向こうで体を躍らせ、大きな選手たちを投げ飛ばす谷亮子（当時は田村）の小さな背中は、まだ１３歳だった吉田の人生に決定的な道標をくれた。

　「私も夢を持てるようになった。夢を持つことで努力ができるようになった」

　その大会で、旗手を務めたのが谷。１６年後、あこがれの人と同じ重責を担い、夢の原風景に自身を重ねることができた。だが、その感慨を味わう気にはなれなかった。五輪３連覇の重圧、「女性旗手＝勝てない」のジンクス。５月下旬には団体戦で４年４カ月ぶりの敗北も味わった。夜、目を閉じれば対戦相手の顔が浮かび、悪夢がよぎる。これほど不安と焦りに駆られた大会はなかった。

　腹を固めたのは、ここ数日のことだ。「最高の舞台。やっぱり暴れないと。勝たないと意味がないんだし」。小天（てん）狗（ぐ）のようにマットを縦横に駆けた過去２度の五輪とは違う。派手な一撃狙いを捨てた。勝つことに徹し、勝つための戦術を貫き、「賢いレスリング、大人のレスリングができた」。ロンドンの舞台は金を取るためだけにあった。

　■「練習したい」

　焦がれ続けた国民的ヒロインを超える五輪３連覇。壮大な物語の主役を担った吉田だが、“神話”とともに数々の名言を紡いだ谷のようには、うまい言葉が浮かばない。「（競泳の）北島康介君が『何も言えねえ』って言ってたけど、あの気持ち、よく分かる」

　それでも、自分の背中を子供たちには追ってほしいと思う。谷の背中にあこがれた自分が、五輪の夢をかなえたように。

　吉田の体内には、次の戦いを求めて早くもアドレナリンが駆けめぐる。世界選手権の９連覇と合わせて世界大会１２連覇。「霊長類最強の男」と呼ばれた男子レスリングのアレクサンドル・カレリン（ロシア）の記録に並び、外野の声は「次はカレリン超えを」と求める。「超えたいよね。（みんなも）超えてほしいよね。もう明日から練習したくなってきた」。超人というほかない。（森田景史）
